KMS Suite Products - KES
Knowledge Engineering System

Overview
CSW’s Knowledge Engineering System (KES) forms part of CSW’s Knowledge Management Suite (KMS) for the creation and management of knowledge.  KES provides a web-based application framework to manage the entire publication process, including content editing and versioning, user permissions, metadata and ontology management and workflow. It can be successfully applied to a wide range of information based organisations and has the capability to work both onsite and in remote and offline modes, depending on user requirements.

By utilising the benefits of XML, KES offers a quick, easy and highly effective way to edit documentation within a user-friendly environment. In addition to standard editing tools, KES provides a number of other editing options, based on the requirements and skill set of your users. Using KES, advanced knowledge engineering functionality is available through an intuitive, easy-to-use web-based user interface. Authors and editors can create and edit in a familiar environment such as Microsoft Word; and features such as automated pagination and transformation for production or proofing are available at the click of a button. This means organisations can quickly reap the benefits of XML content component management and yet no specialist knowledge or training is required.  For technical editors and those more familiar with XML, KES can also work with all the main editing systems, including Arbortext's Epic and Altova's XMLSpy.

All content is stored in a secure repository in KES, with controlled access to all individual components. All user interaction passes through CSW’s Access Control Framework (ACF), a sophisticated tool that provides very precise control of permissions such as which content components can be viewed, edited, published and by whom.  From the outset, KES has designed to take advantage of open standards technology and XML interoperability, the system is also easily able to integrate within legacy systems and database platforms.

All KES functions within the KMS product suite can be performed on any individual component or batch of components. This approach ensures that content can be managed across publications, enabling cross linking and crucially giving the ability to reuse the same component in multiple places. Using KES, content can be created, edited and stored once in a format that allows them to be reused in many different ways and in other content products.  Costs are reduced, by only having to maintain a single source of content, while at the same time being able to product multiple formats. Organisations are then able to increase revenues and accelerate time to market - ensuring benefits to both your editorial team and your customers.
